Update summary

Director-General of Health Dr Ashley Bloomfield gave media an update on New Zealand's response to COVID-19.

  • Dr Bloomfield updated media on what we are doing at the border.
  • He advised that we continue to deny entry to non-New Zealand residents who have travelled through or from mainland China.
  • Public health officials have been present at Christchurch and Auckland International airports since 27 January. We are continually monitoring developments and checks and controls remain in line with the World Health Organizations as well as with Australia's border controls.
  • Dr Bloomfield outlined the passenger process on arrival into Auckland as an example.
  • Dr Bloomfield responded to interest around cruise ships and other maritime traffic by outlining the health and safety protocols in place for people arriving by sea. COVID-19 is a notifiable infectious disease in New Zealand therefore the Master or ship's doctor must tell local public health if anyone on board is ill so a risk assessment can be undertaken.
