Phone Counselling Service Busy Following Christchurch Tragedy

News article

17 March 2019

A phone counselling service available nationwide for anyone distressed by Friday’s events continues to provide a valuable service.

If you or someone you know needs mental wellbeing support or advice then call or text 1737 anytime day or night to talk to a trained counsellor.

As at 2pm Sunday 17 March the service had today provided 205 phone or text/web chat counselling sessions – significantly more than usual. Yesterday 802 phone and text/web chat counselling sessions were provided.

Each of the counselling sessions can take some time – up to 20 minutes – to allow callers to talk through what is troubling them, for the counsellor to listen and then to provide some advice.

Additional staff have been arranged to take calls.  If you do face a wait – please note there is no charge and precedence is being given to calls from the Canterbury region.

Healthline 0800 611 116 remains available for other health related calls.
